ABOUT YOUR PRESCRIPTION (RX)
 
If you select a prescription lense in your order, you will need to complete the prescription form in the product details. Your prescription must be written by your doctor. Your prescription provides your doctor’s (an ophthalmologist or optometrist) advisement for clear vision. It specifies the refractive power needed in eyeglasses to correct blurred vision due to ailments such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. Blurred vision is the result of light incorrectly focused on the retina. The hardening of the lens in your retina is a continuous process, not something that suddenly happens in middle age. It has been occurring your entire life. However, it is around 40-45 when the process progresses to the point where it interferes with reading. Most people need glasses for reading starting around 40-45 years old.

Your prescription is typically measured by a phoropter or an automated refractor.
Understanding your prescription
CYL (cylindrical): astigmatism correction by adding or subtracting strength along the horizontal axis, the vertical axis or a diagonal axis. Sometimes doctors indicate a plus or minus value. The plus value magnifies an object and the negative value reduces it. A cylindrical correction assists reading wide columns of print because the surface of the lens magnifies only height and not width. The CYL puts an optical system in focus and reduces blur in only one direction. Sometimes this part of the prescription is blank.

SPH (spherical): correction by adding or subtracting the same refractive strength along both the horizontal and vertical axis; considered the overall power. The positive and negative powers magnify and reduce objects as mentioned above. The ailment is equally blurred vision in all directions.

DV (distance vision): the part of the prescription designed primarily to improve far vision. In a bifocal lens, this generally indicates what is to be placed in the top segment. For most people under forty years of age, this is the entire prescription.

NV (near vision): indicates reading work. some doctors will write the reading prescription separately, in its entirety. If this is the case, enter the power in the BOTTOM half of the form only. Sometimes NVO is written for near-vision-only and your doctor is recommending “reading-only” glasses.

OD (oculus dexter): right eye

OS (oculus sinister): left eye

OU (oculi uterque): both eyes

X (axis): is the horizontal, vertical or diagonal angle of the cylindrical correction. The axis is measured in a clock face that starts with zero degrees in the 9 o’clock direction, and increases through 90 and 180 degrees in a counter-clockwise direction. The total power of a CYL lens varies from along it’s main axis to its maximal value along the axis 90 degrees away. The total power of a lens with a spherical and cylindrical correction changes accordingly: along the axis specified on the prescription it is equal to the value listed under “spherical”, and it reaches the sum of “spherical” and “cylindrical” along the axis perpendicular to the one listed on the prescription. Written in a prescription X 90 means Axis 090.
 
ADD: how much power gets added to the distance Rx, for your reading-only Rx or for the bottom half of your bifocals/progressives.

PD (pupillary distance): the distance in between your right pupil and your left pupil, in millimeters (mm). This measurement ensues the correct positioning of your lenses within the frame. To measure on your own, download the ruler and have someone help you measure the center of the pupil in one eye to the center of the pupil in the other eye. Most adults have a PD between 55-65 and most kids have a PD between 42-54.

*note -50 = -0.50 and +100 = +1.00 It is common for the doctor to sometimes leave out the decimal points. If you see a number like -25 or +175, it is understood that your doctor means -0.25 or +1.75, respectively. Also, an axis of 5 (or 05) is the same as 005; 90 is the same as 090. It’s like using abbreviations or writing in short-hand.

  • When cylindrical correction is needed, the mathematics and optics of the way lenses combine mean that there are two different ways to write the same correction. One is called the plus-cylinder form and the other the minus-cylinder form. These two prescriptions are equivalent.
    • Both of the prescriptions below specify the power of 2.00 diopters at the 90-degree (vertical) axis and 3.00 diopters at the 180-degree axis.
    • The first prescription states a 2.00 SPH which would be the over all power. And then adds 1.00 CYL at 180 degrees. The result is 2.00 diopters at 90 degrees and 2.00 + 1.00 = 3.00 diopters at 180 degrees.
    • The second prescription states a 3.00 SPH and then reduces the 1.00 CYL. The result is the same: 2.00 diopters at 90 degrees and 3.00 diopters at 180 degrees.

  • Your doctor may write your prescription on a Rx pad without the eyeglass prescription grid. If this is the case, you can draw imaginary grid-lines to separate the numbers. The top power is always the right eye & the bottom power is always the left.
  • If you don’t see numbers in some of the boxes (if there is no CYL or AXIS or ADD), leave those values blank when ordering. If you only see one number for each eye, it’s the “SPHERE” power; leave all the other fields blank.
  • If you have no astigmatism in one or both eyes, your doctor may just write the sphere power alone, or may use placeholders like SPH or D.S. (diopters sphere, which means you have sphere power only) instead.
  • When no correction is prescribed, the SPH will sometimes be written as 0.00 or Plano or PL or plo (as a placeholder for the number zero). The lenses are optically equivalent to a flat piece of glass.
  • If you have a prescription for bifocals, and you only see one ADD power, it’s understood that you have the same ADD for both eyes. If you don’t see an ADD power, leave it blank.
